Chase 3D? --- MNF Wins --- Eutelsat's "Over There" Successes
16 Sep 2010 - 13:02 by soullezz

Trends & Strategies: 3D is not the new HD, News Corp's Chase Carey told a Hollywood Radio Television Society luncheon. "I don't think you'll pop home and watch 8 o'clock TV with 3D glasses on," he said. But, 3D or no, he does expect you to pay more for your video services, with retransmission consent taking the lead. "Broadcast networks still have audience shares that dwarf anyone else's out there," he said. And, "Like a cable channel, (Fox) needs to fight to get the revenue that reflects that value the network provides." --- Email is still the No. 1 app for smartphones as a comScore study finds that two thirds of all mobile subscribers used their mobile to send a text message to another phone in July 2010. Next highest in usage was the browser, which was accessed by 33.6% of subscribers.

Over There: Satellite is winning the MVPD wars over there, says the latest survey from Eutelsat. Both cable and satellite showed double-digit growth over the past two years across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. But the DTH/SMATV sat market is the real growth driver, ballooning from 111.5M homes in 2008 to 129.3M homes today. At the same time, cable penetration decreased slightly, a fact which Eutelsat attributes primarily to the development of IPTV, particularly in France.

Hispanics & Media: In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), Nielsen has released a snapshot report on Hispanic media use in the U.S. Among the key findings: Of Hispanics who primarily speak English at home, nearly one-third watch Spanish language television for more than an hour a day. Likewise, almost 40% of mostly-English speakers use some Spanish language internet daily. And finally, as shown by the chart here, Hispanic subscribers use cell phones and data applications more frequently than average, with monthly bills typically hitting $104/month versus an overall average of $91. Programming: "Monday Night Football" scored its best ESPN opening night with a 10.9 for game one, the Baltimore Ravens v. the New York Jets. --- CBS Sports has launched a pro football app for the iPad offering NFL coverage plus fantasy football player updates and advice. --- Comcast has added six Hispanic nets from Olympusat to its MultiLatino tier in Denver, Salt Lake City, Tucson and Twin Cities. --- Joe Namath has joined Sirius XM's NFL Radio lineup with a weekly talk show on Fridays. (And Mel Karmazin thinks Howard Stern will re-sign.) --- TWC's New York systems have added EWTN HD to their line-ups.

People: MTV veteran Meg Lowe is Discovery's new SVP of domestic distribution.

Technology: Fiber to the home networks are now available to 20 million North American homes, says the FTTH Council. Of those, 6.45M receive FTTH services.

Partnerships & Deals: Dutch DBS operator 'yes' has selected Harmonic to deploy its converged video suite as part of the satellite company's OTT VOD service. --- SkyVision has added more reliability and flexibility to its satellite-based broadband with iDirect's Evolution platform.

Flying High: Intelsat was once again honored as one of the nation's most innovative users of business technology on the InformationWeek 500. --- DIRECTV hit another high on the markets with its price topping out at $41.07, a new 52-week high, late yesterday. It closed the day at $40.99.
