Intelsat Launches IS-17 Communications Satellite
Intelsat, a provider of fixed satellite services, revealed that Arianespace has launched the Intelsat 17 satellite, or IS-17.
According to official sources, the Ariane 5 vehicle lifted off from Kourou, French Guiana, followed by successful spacecraft separation and signal acquisition according to expectations.
The satellite was built by Space Systems/Loral and is designed to provide C- and Ku-band capacity across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Russia and Asia from the 66-degree E orbital location. This satellite is expected to replace the Intelsat 702 satellite and will provide service for the next 16 years. IS-17 is scheduled to start its services from the first quarter of 2011.
Dave McGlade, Intelsat CEO, said in a release, “Intelsat 17 is an important addition to our fleet, allowing us to expand our successful Asian video distribution neighborhood located at 68.5 degrees E, on the Intelsat 10 satellite.”
“This satellite’s enhanced transponders include linear C-band capacity and multi-continental coverage that is attractive to programmers looking to expand distribution in a region that extends across Asia and into Europe and Africa,” McGlade added.
Intelsat source revealed that the IS-17 was part of a nine-satellite investment program presumably the largest in Intelsat’s history. The investment program is expected to provide enhanced high-powered capacity to Intelsat’s global fleet.
Also the next launch slated for Intelsat will be Intelsat New Dawn satellite that is scheduled for launch in late first quarter 2011. It will be located at 33 degrees E. Also this satellite will deliver new capacity for voice, wireless backhaul, Internet and media applications for customers, serving the African region.
