DirecTV to raise satellite TV rates 4% in 2011

Satellite TV provider DirecTV said Monday it will raise rates for most TV packages beginning in February. The company said in a note on its website that higher programming costs make the increase necessary. News reports said DirecTV enacted a similar rate increase a year ago.

DirecTV said rates for “most TV packages” will rise 4 percent, while prices also will rise for some optional services.

“It’s never an easy decision to raise prices. Unfortunately, the increasing costs we pay to carry the channels you see sometimes force us to adjust our prices. For several years programming costs have steadily outpaced the average increase our customers have seen on their bills,” DirecTV said in the statement.

DirecTV said more information would be available with subscribers’ January or February bills.

Satellite TV services are a major competitor to local cable TV companies, including Time Warner and the MI-Connection Communications System, which is owned by the towns of Davidson and Mooresville. Time Warner also has announced plans to raise prices beginning in January (basic cable prices will rise 8.5 percent) while MI-Connection officials said this fall that a price increase is possible in 2011.
